A living will appoints a person (health care surrogate) to carry out your wishes during end-of-life matters. This is a legal document that must be followed. This can include the life-saving measures that you want taken on your behalf; these can deal with hydration, nutrition, various medical interventions and more.
Durable powers of attorney can help your loved ones avoid costly legal guardianship processes on your behalf. There are two different powers of attorney:
- A health care power of attorney gives someone whom you trust the power to make certain limited decisions on your behalf during a time of your incapacitation or recovery from surgery.
- A financial power of attorney allows your designated person to make financial decisions on your behalf and to take care of your financial affairs during a set period of time.
